of the Trent, all that England has seen in
it, it is necessary to commence by supposing that the
United States, which have already a sufficiently heavy
task on their hands, it seems to me, have been tempted,
besides, to procure a quarrel with Great Britain.
Hypotheses of this kind will be welcomed only by those
who feel themselves unconquerably impelled to praise
the messages of Mr. Jefferson Davis, and to stretch
their hand decidedly to the brave South, which has
so much to complain of, and which is defending so just
a cause![C]
