In the following essay, Ince argues that Vigny is, most essentially, a didactic poet whose chief fault is a tendency toward "overt moralizing. "

Vigny says his ambition is to write poetry in which "une pensée philosophique est mise en scène sous une forme Épique ou Dramatique."1 He asserts: "Ce que je suis partout (je crois), c'est moraliste et dramatique." He calls himself "une sorte de moraliste épique."
