We can get some way further with 'Sitalkas' and the rest than Bryant Knox does (Vol. III, No. 1, pp. 71-83). Some of his information is helpful, but there are things he has missed which are essential to a full understanding of the Upward ideogram, both as to what it is in itself and as to how it fits into The Pisan Cantos. First its components must be recognized and brought into clear focus. Then it may become as a lens, bringing related material into order.
