Tim, the central character [of Caldicott Place], is one of Miss Streatfeild's most attractive: he does the opposite to what the adults suggest, with excellent results. Though her old loves of stage and ballet reappear here, the author's chief theme is the adjusting to serious tragedy which can disrupt any family suddenly. Here father's car crash results in a head injury which temporarily makes him withdraw from life…. The involuntary bad behaviour of the family under the stress of moving first into a cramped flat without treasured possessions and then into the vast unfamiliar mansion is sympathetically drawn…. Tim's faith brings about his father's cure in unorthodox manner. There are some delightful smaller characters like "Edup-when-pressed", so called through her mother's belief in her reluctance to work. The book is marred, however, by the scarcely veiled patronage towards suburbia at the beginning. (pp. 53-4)
