On the 9th of February, 1930, after six years of separation from his home and family, Unamuno returned at last to Spain with the fall of the Primo de Rivera dictatorship. The unhappy period of exile seemed to precipitate for Unamuno a problem which had existed beneath the thematic concerns of a major portion of his writing up to that time. Unamuno himself writes of it in his prologue (1932) to San Manuel Bueno, mártir, calling it, “el pavoroso problema de la personalidad, si uno es lo que es y seguirá siendo lo que es.”¹ This formulation, however, omits an aspect of the problem...
