In the following review, Ziolkowski commends Handke's intent but finds his efforts to provide an impartial view of Serbia unsuccessful in Eine winterliche Reise zu den Flüssen Donau, Save, Morawa und Drina oder Gerechtigkeit für Serbien.

Peter Handke's controversial essay [Eine winterliche Reise], which first appeared in January 1996 in the Süddeutsche Zeitung, is yet another manifestation of his continuing fascination with the former Yugoslavia. Ten years ago, in his semiautobiographical fiction Die Wiederholung (see WLT, 61:2, p. 284), Handke, the descendant of a Slovenian grandfather, portrayed the intellectual awakening of a young writer in the course of a trip through that northwestern province.
