In the following essay, Plater examines the significance of the complex objectification of inner life in Meyer's novellas.

The underlying principle of Conrad Ferdinand Meyer's narrative art was expressed by his sister Betsy as follows:

'Mein Bruder sehnte sich von jeher, so zu dichten, daß durch sein Wort nicht Gedanken ausgedrückt, sondern handelnde Gestalten geschaffen würden. "Jeder Gedanke muß seinen schönen Leib haben," meinte er … "In der Poesie muß jeder Gedanke sich als sichtbare Gestalt bewegen. Es darf kein Raisonnement, nichts gedankenhaft Beschreibendes als unaufgelöster Rest übrig bleiben. Es muß alles Bewegung sein und Schönheit!" sagte er mir oft.'1
