That [The Selected Stories of Mavis Gallant] is beautifully produced, a fine selection of her stories, and a bargain at $39.95 for almost 900 pages is the crucial point to make in this review about one of Canada's most eminent fiction writers. Yet there are also a number of oddities about the publication that require mentioning. The volume appeared in late 1996 to the sort of hype we have come to expect from a major publisher like McClelland & Stewart, but within a short time many bookstores were complaining that they could not obtain stock.
