Most [of the stories of Night Shift] could be classified as "horror stories," yet they lack the true horror of Henry Kuttner …, the obsessiveness of H. P. Lovecraft, the variety of Richard Matheson, the humor of John Collier, the richness of Ray Bradbury. But all the stories are competently done, some ("The Mangler," "Quitters, Inc.") much above that.
