[The] seven cautionary folk legends [in Mouse Woman and the Mischief-Makers], told with spare strength and humor, are exceptional for revealing the bedrock upon which the Northwest Indian culture stood. Harris recreates a world where balance and harmony among living creatures are valued above all and where even supernatural narnauks (including proper little Mouse Woman herself) can occasionally become "mischief-makers."
