When he's out in public, he envisions those situations that might threaten his retreat. He has to make certain, for example, that no one sees him push open his front door or remove the board, which looks as if it's nailed shut but in fact is not. Though the alley is fairly deserted, occasionally he has to walk past the entranceway two or three times all because he has crossed paths with someone, and must therefore put him on a false trail by simply continuing on his way.
