Dictionary of Literary Biography on William Sharp
William Sharp impressed many people with his robust and masculine features, his genial charm, and his bluff manner. Writing in 1912, his wife, Elizabeth Sharp, recalled that "he was a Viking in build, a Scandinavian in cast of mind, a Celt in heart and spirit." Arthur Waugh, father of novelist Evelyn Waugh, described Sharp in the 14 August 1936 Spectator as "Olympian" in stature, with a "bright complexion, full head of hair, and well-kempt beard." Waugh added that "his manner was a mixture of suavity and aggression, and he knew (no man better) how to overcome the hesitation of editors." In marked contrast William Butler Yeats, his former friend, grew to "hate his red British face of flaccid contentment," as he once wrote in a letter.
