World of Computer Science on William C. Norris
William C. Norris is a computer pioneer who was instrumental in producing some of the early supercomputers. Norris is also a firm believer in education and technology to help the underprivileged and has set up many organizations aimed at addressing social issues.
William C. Norris was born in 1911 in Nebraska on his family's farm. His early education was carried out in a one-roomed schoolhouse until he moved to high school. At high school Norris developed a passion for physics and electronics. This interest took him to the University of Nebraska, and he graduated with a B.S. in electrical engineering in 1932. His academic career was halted by the death of his father--he had to return to run the family farm. During the Depression Norris was able to take a part-time position at the local Agricultural Adjustment Administration office, where he helped farmers hit by the hard times. These...
