Dictionary of Literary Biography on William Bradford, III
William Bradford is most often remembered as the "patriot printer of '76" because of his contributions to the cause as editor and publisher of the Pennsylvania Journal, or Weekly Advertiser and his military service during the American Revolution. Bradford also occupies a niche in the history of magazine journalism. As publisher of the American Magazine, or Monthly Chronicle for the British Colonies, and later of a second American Magazine, Bradford encouraged the growth of national unity, provided a forum for the recognition of native talent, and contributed to the intellectual life of the colonies.
Bradford was born in Hanover Square, New York City, the son of Sytje Santvoort and William Bradford II. He was the grandson of William Bradford I, who had established the second press in America after arriving in Pennsylvania as part of William Penn's expedition.
