Dictionary of Literary Biography on Umberto Saba
Ambiguity or duality could be the dominant character of Umberto Saba's life and poetry. Even in his concept of a poet (stated in Scorciatoie e raccontini [Shortcuts and Small Tales. 1946]) Saba posits a duality of child/man, ever present at the moment of artistic creation:
Solo là dove il bambino e l'uomo coesistono, in forme il più possibile estreme, nella stessa persona, nasce--molte altre circostanze aiutando--il miracolo: nasce Dante. Dante è un piccolo bambino, continuamente stupito di quello che avviene a un uomo grandissimo; sono veramente "due in uno."
(Only when the child and the adult coexist in the most extreme forms, in the same person, can we say that the miracle happens: Dante is born. Dante is a small child, constantly surprised by what happens to a very great man; they are really "two in one.") More important than a judgment on Dante, this observation...
