In October 1995 Tom Glavine stood on the mound facing the most powerful team he had ever pitched against. A win would give his team, the Atlanta Braves, the World Series championship. The road to this point had taken many turns for Glavine. He had given up a promising hockey career to play professional baseball, he had developed his trademark circle change-up pitch (by accident), and he had taken an unpopular stand for what he believed in during the players' strike that forced an early ending the 1994 season. Glavine's 1995 World Series-clinching victory against the Cleveland Indians made all the twists and turns of his career worth the trouble and further established him as one of the best pitchers in the major leagues.
