Dictionary of Literary Biography on Thomas James
Thomas James is best remembered for his role as Sir Thomas Bodley's first librarian. In that capacity he worked under Bodley's close supervision, and together the two men created one of the foremost libraries of Europe. James was instrumental in organizing the library and in producing the printed catalogues of 1605 and 1620, which long served as models of their kind. The adoption of mandatory legal deposit of new books in the library was his idea, though it was brought to fruition by Bodley. James was also a prolific scholar whose Protestant zeal compelled him to examine and edit the early manuscripts of the church fathers so as to return those patristic texts to their original purity.
