Dictionary of Literary Biography on Th?ger Larsen

Although Thøger Larsen did not establish himself as an author until the beginning of the twentieth century, his writing is often considered a part of nineteenth-century Danish literature. His debut collection, Vilde Roser (Wild Roses, 1895), merely served as a precursor to the core of his viable oeuvre. Historically, Larsen's poetry reflects the Danish symbolism popular in the 1890s. Thus, he was one of the poets who bridged Romanticism and twentieth-century modernism.

Thøger Larsen was born on 5 April 1875 in Geller Odde, north of Lemvig, in western Jutland. In the style of the times, he published Vilde Roser under his toponym, Underbjerg, instead of his last name, but never again. Thøger was the eldest of three children in a home that was poor but not impoverished. His father, Peder Larsen, a millwright, had moved to Underbjerg to oversee a pump at a land-reclamation project...
