Dictionary of Literary Biography on Theodore (Russell) Weiss
Theodore Weiss was born in Reading, Pennsylvania. His childhood was spent in various small Pennsylvania towns, and he was educated at Muhlenberg College in Allentown. Weiss received his B.A. from Muhlenberg in 1938 and his M.A. from Columbia in 1940. In 1941, he married Renee Karol, a violinist and author of children's books, and began a teaching career. He has served on the faculties of the University of Maryland (Summer 1941), the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (1942-1944), Yale University (1944-1946), and Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York (1947-1966). Most recently, he has been associated with Princeton University, first as poet-in-residence (1966-1967) and, since 1968, as a professor of English and creative writing.
