Dictionary of Literary Biography on Theodore Low De Vinne
Theodore Low De Vinne was a printer and bibliophile of prodigious energy and scope. He was one of the great historians of printing; indeed, he was the one who ascertained that Johannes Gutenberg was the true inventor of printing in the Western sense. He built an impressive book collection on the history of printing, which, when it was sold in 1920, was described by Henrietta Bartlett, rare books librarian at Yale University, as "the finest library on the history of printing which has ever been offered for sale in this country." He was a type designer and trendsetter in book-composition styles, an enthusiastic adopter of new printing technology, and the originator of many innovations.
