Dictionary of Literary Biography on Susan Miles
In 1962 "Susan Miles" set up her own publishing company, Romany Press, in Bedford, as she "had a stubborn belief that what she had written was less negligible than contemporary critics would think it." She published three small books of poetry that year; one of them, A Morsel of Gold and Other Studies, ends with a list of other writings by Miles that is prefaced by the poignant note "All out of print--." Miles's work never was reprinted, and it is not widely known today. Her poetry merits study, however, for its quiet irony, serious purpose, and psychological insight. Her infatuation with words and experimentation with language place her in the modernist camp. In her time she was popularly known mainly for Dunch (1918), her first book of poetry, which deals with her experiences as a pastor's wife in a rural village; her most critically acclaimed work was a novel...
