Director Spike Jonze shot into the mainstream with his first feature film, Being John Malkovich. Though the sleeper hit nabbed the director an Oscar nomination, it was not typical Hollywood fare. It is a quirky fantasy about a man who comes upon a room in his office building that leads into the mind of the eponymous character. This was the perfect project for Jonze, whose oddball wit and unconventional way of looking at the world helped make the project a success. Jonze cut his directorial teeth on music and commercial videos for years before graduating to feature length films, ads, and clips that reflect a decidedly subversive view on the accepted way of doing things.
