Dictionary of Literary Biography on Roswell Smith
Roswell Smith was an archetypal publisher. He was the president of the Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine when that publication was regarded as America's best periodical. He originated St. Nicholas: Scribner's Illustrated Magazine for Girls and Boys, considered the finest magazine published for children. He also published The Century Dictionary and Cyclopedia (1884-1891), the authoritative work until the Oxford Dictionary. Smith's motto was: "Work hard and hold your promise," to which he added business practices based on a faith in man and God. Smith was one of the first publishers to establish employee stock options and profit-sharing plans. His pioneer advertising and distribution ideas helped create the modern magazine. Smith maintained a low profile during his life and continues to be virtually unknown, forgotten by biographers, despite his major contributions to American magazines.
