Dictionary of Literary Biography on (Rolla) Lynn Riggs
Lynn Riggs is the premier playwright from Oklahoma and wrote most of his plays about that state. Most of his twenty-five full-length plays saw production, and many were published. In addition to writing plays and motion-picture scripts, throughout his adult life he published poems in magazines. Although his poems, which were collected in two volumes, have received little critical attention, they constitute a significant body of work, with colorful imagery, a strong sense of place, and metaphors that reflect his Cherokee roots. He is best known for his play Green Grow the Lilacs, which was produced on Broadway in 1931 by the Theatre Guild. In 1943 the same company produced a musical version of the play, with music by Richard Rodgers and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II; the phenomenal success of Oklahoma!, which closely follows Riggs's plot and dialogue, would alone be sufficient to establish Riggs's reputation as an outstanding...
