Dictionary of Literary Biography on Roland Giguere

Roland Giguère, the son of Maurice and Jeanne Bourgoin Giguère, was born in Montreal on 4 May 1929. After graduation from secondary school in 1947, he began his study of the graphic arts. In 1949, to publish poetry and prints by Quebec writers and artists, he founded Editions Erta in Montreal. The value and significance of Giguère's own poetic work has been widely recognized only since the publication of retrospective volumes which span his writings from 1949 to 1978. Until then, Giguère, who at Erta was his own printer and publisher, had circulated his poems in artistically superb but not widely available limited editions. With the first retrospective volume, L'Age de la parole, published by Hexagone in 1965, many Quebec readers discovered an exhilarating and original poetic adventure.
