Dictionary of Literary Biography on Reuben Ship
Reuben Ship is best known for The Investigator, an hour-long burlesque drama produced by CBC-Radio in May 1954. The broadcast caused much comment in Canada and the United States because it directed its satirical fire at Sen. Joseph McCarthy and the several committees of the U.S. Congress then investigating Communist subversion in education, the arts, industry, and government. Ship felt that he and other artists were the victims of a witch-hunt in the United States (and in Canada to a much lesser extent) and that many politicians were exploiting the Red Scare to enhance their political power or to curtail the freedom of those with whom they disagreed. In fact, the RCMP had investigated some CBC personnel, and one week after the broadcast Frank Lennard (P. C.
