Raoul Auernheimer represents a literary type often encountered around the turn of the century in Vienna: a talented author who was primarily a journalist and theater critic but who also wrote novels, short stories, and dramas, some of which reached the level of true literary excellence. He particularly excelled at the feuilleton, a journalistic form devoted to stylistic brilliance rather than depth of meaning, but he tried to raise the level of this form to educate the public. Many of Auernheimer's feuilletons were republished in book form.
