Dictionary of Literary Biography on Paul Chamberland
The Quebec poet Paul Chamberland was born in Longueuil, a suburb of Montreal. The son of Lucien Chamberland, an industrial designer, and German Lepage Chamberland, he was educated at the Séminaire Sainte-Croix and the Collège de Saint-Laurent. Upon completion of his studies in philosophy at the Université de Montréal (, in 1961; bachelier ès artsbaccalauréat, 1963; license, 1964), he attended the Ecole Practique des Hautes Etudes at the Sorbonne in Paris. At the Sorbonne Chamberland worked on a thesis dealing with poetic and prosaic language, but as an act of rebellion during the 1968 Paris student revolt, he apparently burned it, terminating his formal studies. Subsequently, he taught French and philosophy at the Université de Montréal (1968-1970) and at several Quebec colleges and worked as an editor and translator for the power company Hydro-Quebec.
