Dictionary of Literary Biography on Notker von Zwiefalten
The final line of the Memento mori (circa 1080), "daz machot all ein Noker" (No[t]ker has made all this), appears to contain the name of the poet. Yet scholars are of divided opinion on this matter. According to some, Notker does not refer to the poet but to the scribe who produced the copy. After all, it is argued, the line does not say that Notker scripsit (wrote) all this but that he fecit (made) it--a difference of which a monk schooled in Latin would surely be aware. Others believe that Notker does refer to the poet; examples, they claim, can be found in Latin and German literature in which facere or machon, respectively, are used to describe the process of writing.
