N. F. S. Grundtvig was active in many fields and is remembered in Denmark as a clergyman, poet, theologian, mythologist, critic, philologist, philosopher, educational reformer, politician, and debater. His writing constitutes the largest known body of authorship in Danish, with a bibliography numbering 1,479 items, including a large number of longer works. The register of his unpublished manuscripts fills twenty-eight volumes (with one item per page). Grundtvig's influence on Danish cultural and intellectual history was extensive. In Denmark he is most famous for his hymns and hymn adaptations, which account for roughly one-third of the Danish Lutheran hymnal, and for his work with adult education. Although he wrote only a few texts on adult education, they nonetheless lay the groundwork for the creation of folkehøjskoler (literally, "folk high schools," also sometimes translated as "people's colleges").
