Although Nicholas Flood Davin was a prolific writer whose works include poems, speeches, journalistic writings, and numerous literary, legal, historical, political, and socioeconomic studies, he is now more widely known as one of the most prominent figures in the early political and cultural life of the Northwest Territories. Davin's professional activities and accomplishments, all pursued with characteristic energy and flair, ranged widely: he was a noted lawyer; an able and adventurous reporter and columnist; an editor and founder in 1883 of one of the Territories' first newspapers, the Regina Leader: in 1887, the first Member of Parliament to represent Assiniboia West, and thereafter, an impassioned advocate of regional interests in Ottawa.
