Dictionary of Literary Biography on Netta Syrett

As a young woman Netta Syrett was a member of the coterie around the periodical The Yellow Book and was an active participant in the vibrant and colorful movement surrounding The Bodley Head publishing house. Her work was praised by such notables as W. Somerset Maugham, John Lane, Max Beerbohm, and Arthur Waugh. Syrett's writings between 1890 and 1900 help define the literary milieu of the fin de siecle, and like many others of the Yellow Book circle, she went on to develop her art in the new century. After 1900, however, she was no longer a part of any particular literary group or avant-garde movement. She was a busy woman, turning out novels almost yearly, working with children's theater, entertaining friends, and contributing short pieces to newspapers on such topics as education and Italian customs.
