Sports Stars on Michelle Akers
In 1991 soccer forward Michelle Akers was on the top of the world. She had led the U.S. women's national soccer team to the first-ever World Women's Soccer Championships and experts called her "the Michael Jordan of women's soccer." Then, mysteriously, Akers began to feel exhausted. Unable to play the game she loved, she went to doctor after doctor looking for answers. Finally, she discovered she suffered from Epstein-Barr syndrome, a disease that drained her energy and made it difficult for her to complete even the easiest tasks. Through patience and hard work, Akers has learned to deal with the disease and again has taken her place as the best female soccer player in the world. In 1996 her dream came true when she helped lead the U.S. to the first ever women's soccer gold medal at the Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia.
