Dictionary of Literary Biography on Michael Casey
Michael Casey was born in Lowell, Massachusetts, the son of Thomas Garrett Casey, a teacher, and Louise Depoian Casey, a claims representative. He attended Lowell Technological Institute and earned a B.S. in 1968. During the years 1968-1970 he served in the U.S. Army and stood a tour of duty as a Military Policeman in Vietnam, the experience that lies at the core of his poetry. His collection of poems, Obscenities, won him the Yale Series of Younger Poets Award in 1971 and was published the following year. Casey has held a number of jobs since leaving the army. He was a research assistant at the State University of New York in Buffalo, where he received an M.A. in 1973. He also served as guest editor of Rapport during the same year.
