Mazo de la Roche was among Canada's most popular and prolific writers in the first half of the twentieth century. Although the extent and variety of her contribution to Canadian literature have not been widely acknowledged in contemporary criticism, she achieved international recognition and admiration for a substantial body of work, including twenty-three novels, more than fifty short stories, a history, three biographical works, and numerous plays and tales for children.
