Dictionary of Literary Biography on Mark Strand
Mark Strand was born on Prince Edward Island, Canada, and did his undergraduate work at Antioch College in Ohio, where he completed his B.A. degree in 1957. During the next two years he attended Yale University, receiving the Cook prize and the Bergin prize; his B.F.A. degree was conferred in 1959. The following year he spent at the University of Florence on a Fulbright fellowship. Strand married Antonia Ratensky in 1961; they were divorced in 1972, and in 1976 he married Julia Garretson. Strand received his M.A. degree in 1962 from the University of Iowa, where he worked for three years as an instructor in the department of English.
