Mabel Dodge Luhan was a larger-than-life woman who presided over artistic circles on several continents, four husbands, many lovers, and salons in Italy, New York, and New Mexico. Her four-volume autobiography, Intimate Memories (1933-1937), remains her major literary achievement. She left her mark in many areas of human endeavor: artistic, cultural, social, psychological, and ecological. She was a patron of artists; she established salons that provided a forum for many of the cultural, artistic, and political leaders of her day; she was active in leftist politics; she was an early participant in analysis, having been treated by A. A. Brill, founder of the New York Psychoanalytic Society; and her later life in New Mexico enabled her to work to save the land of the native peoples that she saw threatened.
