Dictionary of Literary Biography on Luz Valle
As is the case with the work of many women writers, Luz Valle's poetry has been mentioned in passing by most Guatemalan literary historians, but her texts remain little studied. Although she was not a prolific poet, the value of her contributions as a woman writer cannot be overlooked. In her role as a literary promoter (especially of other women writers) she contributed frequently to Guatemalan newspapers, as well as founding and editing several publications, including the journals Vida (Life) and Nosotras (Us). In addition to her editorial achievements and her teaching and publishing career, Valle successfully lobbied in 1937 for the creation of a national Mother's Day in Guatemala modeled on the American celebration. The government designated 10 May for the holiday.
