Dictionary of Literary Biography on Luis Llorens Torres
Luis Lloréns Torres, one of the most renowned writers of Puerto Rico, was a politician, an essayist, and a playwright, but mainly he was a poet. His work marked a definite turn in Puerto Rican literature with a personal form of Modernismo that incorporated national elements in its themes. His literary production contributed to the construction of a Puerto Rican national consciousness. Because of his many accomplishments, on 23 April 1933 he received a laurel crown as national poet of Puerto Rico. Lloréns Torres became a symbol of Puerto Rican poetry and regularly recited his poems in public to the delight of his audience.
