Dictionary of Literary Biography on Louvigny de Montigny
Carolus-Glatigny-Louvigny de Montigny, the important Quebec critic, dramatist, and cofounder (with Jean Charbonneau) of the Ecole Litéraire de Montréal, was born in Saint-Jérôme on 1 December 1876. His father, Antoine Testard de Montigny, was a judge; his mother's maiden name was Marie-Louise Hétu. He studied at the Collège Sainte-Marie and then went to law school at the University of Montreal, which he soon abandoned for journalism. As early as 1894 he became a founding member of the Ecole Littéraire de Montréal, of which he was also the first secretary and archivist. In 1895 he began his literary career by publishing a few poems in the Montreal newspapers Le Monde Illustré and Le Samedi, and in 1899 he founded and began editing the newspapers Les Débats and La Gazette Municipale.
