Dictionary of Literary Biography on Linton R. Massey
Linton R. Massey is identified with the William Faulkner collections at the University of Virginia-those that he assembled and donated and those that came to the university largely through his friendship with Faulkner. But he should also be remembered as the pillar under the Bibliographical Society of the University of Virginia, which he served anonymously as a financial supporter and as president in 1948-1949 and from 1951 until his death in 1974.
Linton Reynolds Massey was born in Marietta, Georgia, on 27 January 1900 to John and Elma Massey. He lived in Washington, D.C., prior to World War I and trained as a naval aviation cadet, but the war ended before he saw active service. He then entered the University of Pennsylvania, from which he graduated in 1922.
