Linton Kwesi Johnson is known as the world's first Dub poet, a term he coined to describe the poets that evolved from the practice of Jamaican DJs dubbing their own voices to wordless recordings of reggae records at dance parties. In the twenty-one years since his first poems appeared in London in 1974 he has published four books of poems, recorded eight albums, and performed with the Dennis Bovell Dub Band in more than twenty-one countries. He has established a school. There are Dub poets from Germany to Japan and conferences and anthologies dedicated specifically to Dub poetry.
