Dictionary of Literary Biography on Leon de Greiff
Poet Francisco León de Greiff Haeussler was born to Luis de Greiff Obregón and Amalia Haeussler Rincón on 22 July 1895 in Medellín, in the province of Antioquia, Colombia. De Greiff's last names betray his northern European ancestry. His Swedish paternal great-grandfather arrived in South America to explore mining, while his maternal grandfather was Prussian. In addition, de Greiff had Incan roots via his maternal grandmother. He was the second of four children raised amid Nordic legends, classical music, and an appreciation for the arts. His rebellious nature manifested itself in mischief during the early stages of his life and continued to show by his failure to complete any academic degrees.
