Dictionary of Literary Biography on Konrad Fleck
Konrad Fleck humbly withheld his name from his major work, Flore und Blanscheflur (circa 1220). Only through Rudolf von Ems's Alexander (circa 1230-1254) is it known that "der Vlec der guote Kuonrat" (the good Konrad Fleck) is the poet of the romance Flore und Blanscheflur . Rudolf also provides an approximate date for Fleck's existence by placing him between Freidank and der Stricker; based on Fleck's style, which shows Hartmann von Aue's influence, it is assumed that Fleck must have worked around 1220. Rudolf's attribution of a nonextant Clîes to Fleck has not been proven. Scholars today seem to agree that although Fleck might have begun such an attempt, Ulrich von Türheim probably finished the work. Fleck's dwelling place is also open to speculation. Based on his dialect it is assumed that he must have been of Alemannic origin, possibly from Basel or Swabia.
