Between 1968 and 2003 Kjartan Fløgstad published more than thirty books, including collections of poetry, short stories, and essays; novels; a play; a biography; a company history; the story of Norwegian immigration to South America; travel books; poetry translations; and anthologies. His writings exhibit a detailed knowledge of a wide range of subjects, especially literature and social history. They also reveal him to be a radical leftist and a passionate supporter of the Nynorsk movement, which endorses the more expressive minority Nynorsk form of Norwegian over Bokmål. Fløgstad has garnered prestigious awards for his writing, including the Aschehougprisen (Aschehoug's Prize) in 1975, the Nordisk Råds Litteraturpris (Nordic Council's Literature Prize) in 1978, the Norsk Litteraturkritikerlags pris (Norwegian Society Literary Critic's Prize) in 1980, the Brageprisen (Brage Prize) in 1988, and the Gyldendalprisen (Gyldendal Prize) in 1999.
