Dictionary of Literary Biography on Katharine Susannah Prichard
Well-known in her lifetime in a range of areas--as a journalist, novelist, short-story writer, and playwright as well as a socialist activist and later as a peace activist--Katharine Susannah Prichard had a reputation in the literary and the political life of Australia. She occupied a prominent place among a group of Australian writers--including Frank Hardy, Dorothy Hewett, and Jean Devanny--who were members of the Communist Party of Australia (CPA). A founding member of the CPA when it was established in 1920, Prichard wrote speeches, statements, pamphlets, and articles on behalf of the party. During her long and active writing life, she became one of the outstanding literary figures of her time, and her contribution to Australian literature is now recognized as a major one.
