She was a powerful orator, a prolific writer, and on the editorial staff of two of the largest leftist publications in American history. Her position as one of the few leading women--and one of the only farm women--in the Socialist Party of America (SPA) gave her insight into the exploitation of women and small farmers, and she helped build grassroots support for the Socialist Party during its peak years in the first decades of the twentieth century.
