Dictionary of Literary Biography on Katarina Frostenson
Katarina Frostenson rose to fame in 1992 when she was elected into the Swedish Academy. Lauded as the youngest, and most beautiful, member of the academy, she had also gained the respect and recognition few women writers have. Since her debut in 1978 with the poetry collection I mellan: Dikter (In Between: Poems), she had published seven collections of poetry, a drama collection, several translations, and critical essays. Her combined achievements in introducing international literature to Sweden and in creating "new" poetry and experimental drama won her the vote of the academy. Like her peers Ann Jäderlund and Birgitta Lillpers in Sweden and Pia Tafdrup in Denmark, Frostenson creates poetry that is known for being difficult and obscure.
