Dictionary of Literary Biography on Juan de Flores

Thanks to the research of Joseph J. Gwara and Carmen Parrilla García, some details have begun to emerge about Juan de Flores's life. It seems certain that Flores came from Salamanca and belonged to the lower nobility. He was probably the son of Fernando de Flores, also from Salamanca, and served the houses of Alba and of the Catholic Monarchs: Fernando (Ferdinand) of Aragón and Isabel (Isabella) of Castile. In 1475 Flores was appointed consejero real (royal councillor) and, almost certainly, cronista real (royal chronicler) the following year. His service to the Castilian royal house perhaps antedated the accession of Isabel in 1474 because a "Johan de Flores" is cited as an escribano de la cámara del rey (scribe of the king's chamber) in a document dated 1465.
