Dictionary of Literary Biography on John Cosin
One of the leaders of the reaction against Calvinism in the Church of England, John Cosin championed the adoption of features of Catholic ritual and imagery under King Charles I that were based on his wide reading of patristic, medieval, and later theological works. He was a constant collector of such writings and became one of the most important English collectors of his time. Cosin was also a chief contributor to the 1662 revision of The Book of Common Prayer, and as a rector and later as bishop in County Durham he was responsible for the distinctive designs of various architectural work in the diocese, especially the cathedral city, including the Episcopal library he founded in 1669 that is named after him.
